friendsofnicu adopt a family

On Saturday December 19th, Elanie, Jacob, Matthew and I delivered presents to several families at Mercy San Juan’s NICU as a part of Friends of NICU’s “Adopt a Family” event. The saying of “It’s better to give than to receive” couldn’t be more relevant than it was that day. The two families we adopted were so appreciative of the gifts we brought them and it lifted their spirits while they were going through a very difficult time.

When we arrived, the families were waiting for us in a little waiting area around the corner from the NICU. One of the families had two little ones – a boy and a girl – and once the little girl saw us, she ran over and gave me a big ole hug. She was probably around 5 years old and just full of life. When we gave her the first present, she just lit up like a Christmas tree. “For me??” “Yes, this is for you from lots of Friends of NICU supporters.” She would have been plenty happy with just that one present, but we had a few more to give her. When we gave her the second present, she just started dancing around in circles as if she hit the lottery. And in her eyes, she probably felt she did. Her reaction is the way that we want all of our kids to react when they open a present – full of appreciation, excitement and utter joy. As the little girl was dancing around, I looked over at mom and she was smiling as well and for a few moments, she got to take her mind off the NICU. She’s a single mom raising two little ones with one more in the NICU. Needless to say, because of YOUR generosity, Christmas with her kiddos was just a little extra special this year.

We got the chance to walk through the NICU and see several of the nurses and doctors who took care of Matthew and Ryan almost 10 years ago. Yes, 10 years ago! We dropped off goodie bags for all the families in the NICU and of course, a bunch of sugary treats for the nurses and doctors!

However, as we were strolling along, it felt like it was yesterday. The monitors were beeping, nurses were hard at work helping little miracles get better and families were surrounding their NICU babies, holding them and looking over them.

It was a great reminder of how far we’ve come with our boys as well as Friends of NICU while realizing that the memories of the NICU will stay with us forever.

We want to thank each and every one of you for donating and supporting Friends of NICU over the years and look forward to an awesome 2016 helping many, many, many more families!!
